Eastbourne BAFF’s - Access Innovation

Emergency engineering works on Eastbourne Wastewater Treatment Works Biological Aeration Activated Filters, (BAFF) posed a significant scaffolding cost and challenges to enable removal and replacement of damaged steelwork

The BAFF consists of three different levels with many hazards and challenges

A significant hazard is working at height and access provisions. To allow a Safe System of Work, scaffolding has traditionally been used as a working and access platform; this however was deemed a high cost and time consuming method for these emergency works

The site team got together with R&B Engineering who were already working onsite to brainstorm ideas and through initiative and innovation they designed and constructed a “working basket” to enable works to continue without the use of scaffolding. This has enabled us to proceed with this emergency works without delay and as a bonus could also offer a potential cost saving.
